Hey guys,
We concluded chapter 15 covering Human recources (you have all resources posted/ attached on the blog by now). You answered a full fledged revision sheet on it to emphasis on all concepts. Please be prepared for a pop quiz next week.
We also continued our HR class activity this week, and I think it went very well, and by now you can grasp the process of interviews. Next week, we will start a new chapter covering Marketing.

Hey guys,
This week we covered section 1 in chapter 8 (Leadership Qualities). We talked about the important qualities in a leader like: motivation, communication skills, confidence, and integrity.
You had your first chapter test (Ch. 7) last Wednesday. Hopefully, you’ll receive it graded next week.
Next week we’ll cover section 2 chapter 8 which tackles the leadership styles in organizations.
Your assignment for next week: Write a speech about a leader of your choice and present it in a 3 minutes presentation in front of the class, specifying the reason why you chose this particular leader, and what kind of qualities you admire in his/ her personality.

This week we’ve concluded Chapter 7 Section 1 (Management Functions) and you will have your first quiz next Monday 2nd of March. Next week we’ll also start section 2 (Management Structures).
For next week, kindly find your assignment below: (to be submitted on Monday 2nd of March)
- Research an organizational chart of any organization, and explain the role of each member in it very briefly. Mention the name of the organization you’ve researched and have it displayed on a chart with artwork and creative display. The best ones will get to be displayed in class and receive 20 extra participation points (Use a tree chart format like the one below)

Hey guys,
This week has been all about your new interdisciplinary project for this semester. You have been introduced to the project in three different sessions.
First session: class debate on whether or not people with mental and physical disabilities be included in our small community.
Second session: you’ve been divided into 7 groups with a representation of each discipline in each group, and you’ve been asked to brainstorm how each discipline could contribute to the issue of disabilities.
Third session: we went through the project description and talked about the 5 phases of the project and the role of each discipline in it.
As business class, you will be receiving a rubric made specifically for your discipline covering what you will be doing exactly and how you will be graded.
Also, we will be visiting the “Al Ghad Al Moshreq” foundation next Tuesday as we’re launching the first phase of the project.

So, we’re almost done with the revision game competition, and the scores are pretty close. We will be resuming the final round of the competition next Wednesday (28th of January) and announce the winning team.
As for Monday the 26th of January, as you know, I won’t be able to come to school, and so Ms. Farah has thankfully agreed to take over the class and work with you. I urge you to show her some enthusiasm (like the one you show me every class) 😉

Here is an extra optional credit assignment for those who have been facing some difficulties with their grades:
Referring to all topics covered from the beginning of the year, write an essay of 2,000 words minimum, explaining how business is interrelated with other disciplines (politics, economics, environment, science and technology…etc.) and how interdependent they are on each other. Also, emphasise how business trends have developed over the course of time and why it has become one of the most important fields of study.
This assignment would be due the 11th of January 2015.

Hey everyone,
This week we have concluded the ‘Types of business ownership” section by discussing the ‘Mergers, Acquisitions, Cooperatives, Non-profit organizations, and Joint ventures’.
We also started a new topic ‘Types and Functions of Businesses” (section 6.2)
We have also agreed upon having a quiz next Sunday covering the above-mentioned part, to make sure you’ve fully grasped the concepts. However, since next Sunday you’ll be attending the Drug awareness session, so we can postpone it to Monday.
Finally, I’m reviewing your blog posts regarding the ‘Corporations’ documentary assignment, and we’ll discuss them next week.

Hey guys,
This past week we’ve been watching the very interesting and controversial documentary; ‘The Corporation’.
We haven’t been able to finish it, and so, I would want you to finish watching it during the coming couple of days so you can start answering these discussion questions as a part of an online forum debate on the blog. (These questions are due next Sunday 7th of December) Please make sure you answer by commenting on this post. Reflecting and commenting on other students’ answers will result in extra points.
Discussion questions:
1) What role should the corporation play in our lives and society, if any?
2) Should corporations be entitled to the same legal rights as individuals? Where should the line be drawn?
3) Do you agree with the film’s diagnosis that the corporation is a psychopath? And why?
A key element in the opening scenes of the film is the use of the ‘bad apple’ metaphor. What does this metaphor usually mean?
4) The Corporation locates the beginning of the industrial age as the origin of the modern corporation. Originally a corporation existed as an association of people to carry out a specific function as defined by the state that provided the charter, or authorization and set of limits, on that corporation. A key change was the decision in the United States in 1886 that a corporation could be considered, in a legal sense, as a person.
- Why was this so significant?
- The film argues that the corporation has one overriding obligation, what is it?
5) The film also makes a point about corporations and ‘externalities’—that is, the unintended effect of actions by two parties on third, unconnected, parties. What is that?
- Why is this a problem?
- How is it connected to the nature of the corporation as a ‘person’?
6) The film provides four examples of corporations behaving badly towards workers. Briefly summarize these examples:
- Lay-offs
- Union busting
- Factory fi res
- Sweatshops
7) Should corporations be able to donate to political campaigns? What restrictions would you put in place? Should any organizations be able to contribute?
8) Does the outsourcing of jobs empower poorer nations or exploit them? Explain in your own words.
9) One may ask, “Why haven’t I heard about these cases of corporate exploitation before on news channels like Fox, CNN or ABC?” Why do you think these news channels never broadcast such atrocities done by big corporations?

This week you finally presented your business plan project. And I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for your effort. I know you could do much better, but still kudos for all those who worked hard on it.
We also allocated a full class to review and feedback your performance in the presentation so you’d be able to work on your weaknesses and enhance your strengths.
Since Wednesday class got canceled due to the Suez Canal trip. I would like you to take the weekend as an opportunity to refresh your memory on the topic we were discussing (Types of Business Ownerships) and make sure you complete the following assignment for next Sunday 23rd November:
Q: What do you know about the ‘S Corporations’ and how are they different from the regular corporations? Also research the differences between Cooperatives, Non-profit organisations, Franchises, and Joint ventures.

Hey everyone,
This week we reviewed the Sole Proprietorship advantages and disadvantages, continued the Partnership part and touched base on the Corporation part.
You’ve also received your CSR quiz graded. Your grades are generally satisfying. Thank you, and please keep it up.
We’ve also discussed in class the business plan sample I’ve put on the blog and covered most of its aspect to help you in the project.
I’ve also received the Business plan draft from most of you. I’ve reviewed them and you are good to go, unless I called upon you personally to discuss some changes.
Be reminded that the deadline for the submitting and presenting the project is next Wednesday (the 12th of November). You already have the outline and grading rubric (you can find them attached as well).
You will be having a quiz on the Business Plan section next Sunday (9th of November) So, please be prepared!
Please note, that if you are going to be absent on a day where you have a quiz, you will have to come to school to take the quiz and leave. If you fail to do so, you will be asked to come the next day with a doctor’s note stating the reason why you skipped this day or your quiz will be graded Zero. Also, if you come with a doctor’s note, I will reschedule the quiz for you without announcing a specific date.

So, this week we’ve discussed in class the following topics:

I’ve received from you your research paper about the history of one of the corporations that has undergone explosive growth over a period of only a few decades. I am currently in the process of grading it. It will be given back to you next Sunday with comments.
You’ve also had your ‘Social Responsibility’ quiz this Wednesday. It will be graded and handed back to you ASAP.

Hey guys,
This week you’ve been asked to come up with a draft business plan for a business venture of your choice, and you were asked to present it to class. We’ve also concluded the PPT for the “Business Plan” section.
Your Assignment for next week (Sunday the 26th):
- Research the history of a large company like Microsoft or Apple that has undergone explosive growth over a period of only a few decades. Ask students to write a few paragraphs of details that support the idea that investors and lenders need to know that a company has plans to deal with growth.
Please note that you’ll be having a quiz next Wednesday on the CSR topic. Make sure you are well prepared and study from the book. (P.59-63)

So, this week we’ve discussed and finished the topics ‘Business Ethics’ and ‘Corporate Social Responsibility’ and previewed some case studies. We also started a new section in chapter 5 (Ch. 5 Sec 2) ‘Business Plan’.
I know this has been a rough week especially with all the extra effort you’re doing in school and MUN, but it will be over soon. So, no assignments for this week, but hopefully next week you’d be more energetic and dynamic in class, and we can go full gear.
