Chapter 6 (sec 1,2,3)

18 Dec

Sorry i had to leave early on Sunday. Your projects  presentations will be postponed to Wednesday 17 Dec, I need at least 1 from each group to be present for the presentation so please have this arranged between you.

You will receive your revision packet on Wednesday so that you can have time to study and answer it during the christmas break, still answering it all is not an assignment.

Enjoy your vacation, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 🙂

4 Dec

Semester’s project 2

Design a lesson plan for any of the chemistry lessons you learned based on a game, it could be any kind of game, video game, card game, …etc. To be presented Sunday 14th Dec

This week we are covering covalent bonding and how to draw a molecular structure using electron dot ans Lewis structure.

Assignment: sec worksheet

Section quiz on Sunday 7 Dec

___________________________________________________________________________

26 Nov

This week we are working on chemical bonding.

The differences between ionic, polar covalent and non polar covalent bonds, and relating their differences to electronegativity differences between elements.

Weekend assignment: sec worksheet

Section quiz is on Sunday 30 Nov.

12 Nov

Time for the semester big project.

After studying the periodic table trends, and general properties of different families in the periodic table, now it is time to apply this.

You have to submit a research in the below topic:

Comparison between group 1 and group 2 sulfate salts

their solubilities, their stabilities, and relating this to atomic size and charge ratio.

Your research paper will be graded according to the attached rubrics Chemistry project rubrics

You can work in pairs, not more than 2 per group. Deadline for your project paper is before the winter break.

Your paper should have at least 3 resources, you can use any of the below listed resources links:

http://www.rsc.org

http://www.chemguide.co.uk

http://www.a-levelchemistry.co.uk

For this week we have this worksheet of all the critical thinking questions covering all the sections we have taken since the beginning of the year. We will have all these questions answered and discussed in class.

Practical lab: identifying the factors affecting the rate of a reaction, we will study the effect of changing temperature, particle size and addition of catalysts on the reaction of an effervescent tablet. You will have to finish your lab report questions after finalizing your experiment and obtaining enough data.

On Thu we will be introduced to chemical bonding, you will find this video useful illustrating the idea of valency and bonding

5 Nov

We are practicing more questions and problems on the periodic trend section this week.

Sunday’s Chapter 5 test is postponed till Wednesday 5th as per your request so be ready and well prepared.

we reflected back on your progress report grades before it is released and you still have a chance this week to make up for your missing work.

This week’s practical activity is verifying the law of mass action by performing a chemical reaction between acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate once in a closed system and once in an open system then compare and communicate the results.

29 Oct

This week we studying the different periodic trends of elements of the periodic table (Ch 5 sec 3).

You have your Chapter 5 test next Sunday, so be prepared.

This Thursday it is Halloween, it is a normal school day but we will have fun during our lab session which will be on Thu instead of Sunday this week.

22 Oct

This week we covered the below points:

Quantum numbers

Using electron configuration to find elements position and properties in the periodic table

History of the periodic table

Bohr, De Broglie, Schrodinger, Heisenburg contributions in the atomic model

15 Oct

Dear students welcome back.

This week we will continue practicing on electron configuration different techniques.

Your “Scientists contributions in establishing the atomic model” research due is this Wednesday 15th.

Your Chapter 1& 2 test is postponed till Sunday 19th due to the engagement of some of you with the MUN event.

You may find the below videos useful in understanding the history of the periodic table and relating the periodic table arrangement of elements to electron configuration.

1st Oct

This week we will learn how electrons occupy the energy levels, and the different rules that governs this process.

You will have a test after you are back from Eid vacation, Chapter 1,2 and 3 sec 3. it will be on Wednesday 15/10 so be prepared.

Enjoy your vacation, kol sana wento tayebeen 🙂

23rd Sep

This week we continued working on chapter 3 sec 3 counting atoms problems

You will receive next Sunday a problems packet covering this section’s concept that you will have to finish it in class and submitted to the teacher taking my place. It will be graded as your classwork for that week.

Also we covered the differences between Dalton’s atomic theory and the modern atomic theory in chapter 3 section 1 and again you will receive some worksheets on that topic on Wednesday.

Section 2 has the observations collected from Thomson’s CRT experiment and Rutherford gold foil experiment that led to the discovery of the electron, proton and nucleus.

You will find this video in the below link useful demonstrating these experiments

Again you will be receiving worksheets covering this section to solve in class on Thursday.

I’ll be off to Dubai for a workshop 24- 28. The worksheets that you will receive during my absence period will be corrected and graded as your classwork grades for this week and next week.

You will have your chapter 3 test on Thursday Oct 2nd.
