Week 1

1st to 4th September 2014

Introduction

The objective of the first week was to welcome the students back to school and to familiarize them with the class rules and expectations. We went through the student/parent handbook where the students were introduced to the subject, teacher, objectives, and learning outcomes of the course.

Actual content covered:

  • The students were asked to write a paragraph about what they think about studying history; do they think its important or not important and the reasons behind their answers.
  • Working together as a class, I had the students brainstorm a list of reasons related to why people should study history.
  • Then using the list as a starting point, I guided the students in a discussion about how history impacts people’s lives. How the students believe their own lives are affected by history.
  • We also watched a video where the author and historian David McCullough gave some advise to history students and teachers.
  • The students were asked to write a reflective essay as an assignment about what they thought of the video and McCullough’s advise.

Thank you and best regards,
